[CommonWealth Education] Recognizing Children's Talents! KUMON Ignites Self-Learning Abilities Through Personalized Learning

Every child is born with unique talents and personalities. How can we provide the right guidance, encouragement, and support on their learning journey? A senior educator with over 40 years of experience shares how she helps children harness their talents and gradually develop the key abilities to face future challenges.

The world is undergoing dramatic changes, and global educational trends continue to evolve. In recent years, Taiwan's educational landscape has shifted from simply imparting knowledge to competence-based teaching. This approach encourages children to unleash their talents, engage in diverse, cross-disciplinary exploration and learning, and apply knowledge to real-life situations, demonstrating their attitudes and values.

Ms. Wu Shu-Huan, a teacher at the KUMON Fengshan Wujia Ruilong Center, who has been working in education for over 40 years and has helped countless children develop self-learning abilities, points out, "Reading is the key to unlocking a child's learning. By cultivating their love for reading from an early age, they naturally enjoy reading and will benefit greatly in the future."

Especially for preschool children, cultivating a positive learning attitude and good habits is crucial. "Each child has different talents and abilities. The most important thing is to make learning easy and enjoyable for them. Therefore, the initial support and guidance cannot be overlooked," Ms. Wu emphasizes. She advises parents that the best learning model is to guide and support children according to their abilities, encouraging them to learn independently and consistently.

KUMON's teaching model focuses on developing children's potential and talents. Every child entering a KUMON classroom first undergoes a skills assessment to understand their current abilities. Based on this, they start learning from an appropriate level of material. Through daily, suitably challenging exercises, they gradually build a solid foundation for learning, enabling them to naturally learn independently and surpass their peers in learning progress, thereby enhancing their abilities. "In KUMON classrooms, teachers act as observers, identifying and confirming the child's level, providing appropriate hints, and guiding the child to apply what they've learned to think critically and solve problems, allowing them to steadily accumulate a sense of accomplishment and confidence," says Ms. Wu with a smile.
