[CommonWealth Education] Discovering Children's Talents! KUMON Ignites Self-Learning Ability with Personalized Learning

The world is undergoing dramatic changes, and global educational trends are continuously evolving. In order to equip children with the skills they need for the future, education in Taiwan has shifted in recent years from simply imparting knowledge to a more competency-based approach. This shift encourages children to express their talents and engage in diverse, interdisciplinary explorations, applying knowledge to real-life situations and showcasing their attitudes and values.

Ms. Wu Shuhuan, who has been involved in education for over 40 years and has supported countless children in developing their self-learning abilities, highlights, "Reading is the key that opens the door to children's learning. Cultivating their love for reading from an early age will make them naturally enjoy it, and this will bring endless benefits in the future."
Especially for preschool-aged children, fostering the right learning attitude and habits is crucial. "Every child's talents and abilities are different. The most important thing is to make learning easy and enjoyable for them. So, the initial guidance and support are essential," says Ms. Wu. She advises parents that the best learning model is one that is tailored to the child's abilities, providing appropriate guidance and encouragement to help them learn independently and daily.

KUMON's teaching model focuses on developing each child's potential and talents. Every child who enters a KUMON center first undergoes a diagnostic test to assess their current abilities. Based on this, they start learning with materials appropriate for their level. By engaging with a manageable amount of material each day that is neither too easy nor too difficult, children gradually build a solid foundation for learning. This approach helps them naturally learn independently and progress beyond their peers, enhancing their overall abilities. "In the KUMON classroom, the teachers act as observers, identifying and confirming the child's level. They provide appropriate guidance and help the child apply what they've learned to think critically and solve problems, allowing them to gradually build a sense of achievement and confidence," Ms. Wu smiles as she explains.
