The 4th KUMON Instructor Research Conference Successfully Concluded

The much-anticipated annual KUMON event, the 4th KUMON Instructor Research Conference, officially began on October 23! KUMON is a constantly growing learning organization, focused not only on unlocking the limitless potential of children but also on continually enhancing the professionalism of its teachers. Throughout the day, participants gained a wealth of insights through engaging paper presentations and exchanges.

This year's conference was streamed online, featuring five teachers and four paper presentations. Chairperson Zhao Wen-yu also presented the 2023 Instructor Guidelines. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the President of the KUMON Educational Research Association, Ikegami Hidetaka, unfortunately could not attend in person, but recorded a video to convey his sincere congratulations and gratitude, along with a token of appreciation.

The first paper was presented by Weng Yi-shan, teacher at the KUMON Nantun Limin Dongda Dun 11th Road Classroom, on the topic, "Focusing on Example Problem Guidance in Math B~E Materials to Enhance Self-Learning Ability." After the launch of the new Math BCD materials, Weng noticed a significant increase in students' opportunities to enhance their self-learning abilities. Weng's approach revolves around ensuring students are able to complete materials on their own, allowing more time to assist new students in developing good self-learning habits. This creates a positive feedback loop and transforms the classroom into a launchpad for self-directed learning. Weng emphasized that "the simplest method is the best method; Simple is the best; Basic is the best," carefully examining progress, preparing the materials in advance, and using example problems effectively.

The second paper was delivered by Shi Wei-pei, teacher at the KUMON Yingge Yongming Guohua Classroom, on "Promoting KUMON English Without Any Shortcuts – Discussing the Importance of Teacher Attitude and Basic Guidance." Shi took the opportunity of KUMON's first year of English instruction to aim for better guidance, with structured progress plans and review intervals, which she believes are key to fostering positive learning habits in students. She also emphasized the importance of maintaining consistent communication with parents to ensure that children continue their learning at home in the same manner as in class, which she views as vital to improving learning outcomes in English.
The third paper was shared by Tang Ning-ju, teacher at the KUMON Luzhu Nanshun 1st Street Fenghua Classroom, on the topic, "Smiling KUMON Teachers, Soaring Despite the Pandemic." During the summer and subsequent waves of COVID-19, Tang adapted quickly to online learning, ensuring that children "enjoyed online learning" and achieved results. Tang shared that it is the encouragement and mastery of learning strategies that help keep children motivated, with consistent communication from parents providing reassurance to both children and teachers.

The afternoon session featured a discussion on the launch of the KUMON Mandarin AIAII curriculum, aimed at reinforcing reading skills in children. The session was moderated by Zhou Zong-sheng, Director of Academic Affairs and Research. Teachers Zhang Li-zhen from KUMON Shilin Jiantan Classroom and Huang Jun-yi from KUMON Sanchong Daluo Classroom shared real-life case studies, focusing on key learning points and essential observations when guiding children with KUMON's Mandarin materials. This session provided valuable insights into how the AIAII materials help students from the first to second grade develop a love for independent learning.

After four enlightening paper presentations, Chairperson Zhao Wen-yu presented the 2023 Instructor Guidelines, focusing on "Caring for Each Student, Ensuring Learning Quality, and Enhancing Communication with Parents." Zhao emphasized that the value of KUMON lies in "self-learning beyond grade level," and teachers must observe and understand students' learning conditions while using the materials effectively to create the best learning outcomes. To achieve this, teachers should continuously improve their skills, ensuring students receive "just the right amount of learning" to surpass their grade level and strengthen their self-learning abilities. Regular communication with parents about their children's progress is crucial to gaining their trust and ensuring sustained learning.

Chairperson Zhao also encouraged all KUMON educators to persevere, despite the political, economic, and environmental challenges, and to continue to invest in children's education for their future competitiveness. "We cannot neglect the education of the next generation. We must help them step by step, so they can contribute to society and our country."
After a full day of fascinating presentations and the 2023 Instructor Guidelines, it is clear that KUMON educators are now more energized and eager to bring greater passion and energy to the educational field, helping even more children benefit from KUMON's educational model!
